MAC: Installing MAC OS X Leopard Part 4 (Drivers and Extra Updates)

Audio Driver

Download audio drivers from
http://code.google.com/p/voodoohda
Install .kext file using Kext Helper b7 from http://cheetha.net

Camera

The webcam included on my machine is a BisconCam NB Pro 1.3. This camera is supported only by iChat.
If you need to use the camera inside other applications like Skype, you will need to install CamTwist.
Download and install CamTwist from
http://allocinit.com/index.php?title=CamTwist

Create a Profile and click Save Setup button, in this example is called Test. Select this Profile and click in the Auto Load button.

Then you need to setup CamTwist to autostart with Leopard, because CamTwist needs to load before any application.

Go to System Preferences – System – Accounts

Click on the user and then in Login items.

Add CamTwist and select Hide check box.

MAC: Installing MAC OS X Leopard Part 3 (Updates)

Now I’m going to talk about keep Leopard updated. When I wrote this blog, last update available is 10.5.7.

I found to different ways to keep Mac OS X Leopard updated: manual deploy of updates or using software update. I tried both ways and I prefer software update.

Before the update process we need to download MSI Wind Upgrade Pack v1.5 (also know as CyberGreg Driver Pack) from
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rjt5jzzwn3m or check this post for mirrors http://forums.msiwind.net/osx-installing/cybergreg-driver-pack-mirrors-t13021.html

More info about CyberGreg Driver Pack
http://forums.msiwind.net/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=11352

I recommend having a Mouse USB and Keyboard USB, just in case.

Now we are ready to start installing updates.

Manual Process:

Download and Install Mac_OS_X_10_5_5_Combo_Update
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_5_Combo_Update

DON’T REBOOT.

Install CyberGreg Driver Pack and reboot machine.

NOTE: If you reboot without install CyberGreg Driver Pack, you will need an external Mouse and Keyboard to use the machine.

Install and Download Mac_OS_X_10_5_7_Combo_Update
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_7_Combo_Update

DON’T REBOOT.

Install CyberGreg Driver Pack and reboot machine.

Automatic Process:

Run Software Updates

DON’T REBOOT.

Install CyberGreg Driver Pack every time you run Software Updates and reboot machine.

You can download updates using Software Update and save these updates just in case you need to rebuild the machine.

When you run Software Updates, select Install and Keep Package option on the Update menu.

Updates are located on /Library/Updates/ folder

If you want to download updates manually go to
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates

MAC: Installing MAC OS X Leopard Part 2 (Network)

The first issue I found when boot into Leopard is the wireless. Leopard can't recognize the Atheros AR928x wireless card. There are lots of discussions about this issue on the web.
Easy solution is buying a new wireless card. I read a lot of posts and the winner was Dell Wireless 1510 N mini PCI-E half size card on eBay for less than $30. My new wireless card is on the mail, so more about this soon.

I plugged the Realtek 10/100 NIC into my home router and Ethernet looks disconnected. Modify Network card settings using following steps fixed the issue.

System Preferences
Network
Ethernet
Configure: Manually
Speed: 100baseTX
Duplex: Full-Duplex
MTU: Standard (1500)

If you have NIC issues, I recommend downloading the file RealtekR1000.kext (Realtek Network card driver) from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/realtekr1000/ and reinstall .kext file using Kext Helper b7 from http://cheetha.net

If you got a kernel panic message (like blue screen on Windows) that said "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button..." you need to remove the .kext file and reinstall again.
Check

MAC: Installing MAC OS X Leopard Part 1 (Setup OS)

Before I bought the MSI Wind, I found several web sites taking about install MAC OS X Leopard on the MSI Wind. I don't use MAC, I work deploying enterprise systems and nobody uses Apple systems on large companies, but sounds like a good challenge.

The exercise was done solely for learning purposes. The install of Leopard on PCs violate the Apple Mac OS X EULA. If you are going to run and use Apple MAC OS X Leopard on your MSI Wind, I recommend to buy a license of Leopard
here

There are several ways to install Leopard on Wind. I use WindOSX86 (available on any torrent site around). This version include a hacked build of Leopard 10.5.4.

Because I want to keep the Windows XP intact, I decided to split the hard drive on 4 partitions.

1 - 20 GB for Mac OS X
2 - 20 GB for Windows XP
3 - 20 GB for Windows 7
4 - 90 Gb for Data

Using
Acronis Disk Director, I deleted the fist partition (recovery) and resize the Windows XP partition to 20 GB, leaving 20 GB partion for Leopard before the Windows XP.
Optional: Then you can create extra partions on remaining free space.

I use a external DVD to boot and install WindOSX86, there are some people booting from USB drives (google or bing it).

Install Apple Mac OS X on the first partition and don't delete any partition (if you want to keep XP).
